Prometheus Unbound

Hi and thanks for visiting my gallery page! These photos are from my travels (I travel a lot for work) - if you want to learn more about how I take these shots and who I learn from, visit

The Rockefeller Prometheus, the most notorious witness to many New Yorker ankle benders on the skating ring, is part of a twin set of Titan statues. The other being Atlas, the titan that holds the heavens on his shoulders. Prometheus is here depicted as he delivers fire to mankind... a very heroic pose. Let us note, that for such act of bravery, Zeus had him chained to a mountain while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day. A proof that no good deed goes unpunished.

But don't worry, It took some time, but Heracles did free an extremely jaundiced Prometheus during his 12 trials. And since he was having a bad day, he also killed the eagle for good measure.

The writing you can see in the background reads: "Prometheus, teacher in every art, brought the fire that hath proved to mortals a means to mighty ends."

In the front, you can see skaters, of all levels of ability. Funny that the bringer of fire is on a skating ring.

This photo was...
  • Shot with my Nikon D90
  • HDRed with Photomatix Pro from a set of 3 photos
  • Layered in Photoshop CS4 to remove ghosting
  • Cropped
  • Detail Enhanced in Topaz Adjust
  • Denoised in Topaz Denoise
The next three photos are the ones I shot last November at the Rockefeller lower plaza.

After using Photomatix Pro, the result yielded was pretty, but with a bit of ghosting and artifact issues.

A bit of a zoom shows how those naughty skaters really had to move between shots. For example: the child who is holding on to the rail in order to not smash to the ground is missing a part of his rear, the lady on the right has a ghost head that is actually detached from the body, and the dude to the left has a terrible buzzcut that reminds of Guile from Street Fighter.

This is made even more evident by zooming a bit more.
Before layering, enhancing for details and denoising you can see how such details actually are an issue below.

After layering, you can see that the poor child that is holding on for his life has gotten his ass back. Unfortunately we could do nothing for the dude's buzz cut, which we now suspect was self inflicted.

Ever gone skating in the Reckefeller skating ring? How is it?
